International Matters
I have dealt with international legal matters since the beginning of my practice. Because New York is an international city, international legal matters go hand in hand with practicing law here.
International law consists of treaties and national laws that govern international relations. The United States takes the broadest possible view of the applicability of its laws across the globe, an extension of its superpower status.
However, even U.S. law has its limits. These limits are established voluntarily through treaties or limited judicially by both our and foreign courts. Simple refusal by other nations to enforce U.S. laws on their soil is another limit to U.S. law. Equally true, there are instances where U.S. courts simply refuse to enforce foreign laws. I can assist you in determining whose law will prevail on your matter.
International law directly impacts many of my clients. On behalf of my clients' interests, I have had to consider international taxation concerns as well as substantive business, estate, litigation, bankruptcy and/or will law. I have assisted clients with European legal needs concerning the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Slovenia and Ireland. I have traveled on business for my clients in Germany, Italy and Switzerland.
In addition to the European legal needs, my clients have had me assist them with legal needs concerning Canada, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, Trinidad & Tobago, Cayman Islands, the Philippines, Australia, China and Japan.
In doing my international work, I would certainly like to read and speak more languages that I do and am endeavoring to revive my French and learn a bit of German. For the law, however, I turn to the City Bar Association's massive legal library with its many English versions of foreign law texts to advise you. The library, which is next door to my office, is one of the finest in the United States for these resources.
I would be happy to assist you with any international legal matters. Please call or email me to learn more about how I can assist you.
